Drinking Problems

Could it be a possible problem if lately your dog is drinking 20 times the water than they normally do? I'm talking emptying their water bowl at least 6 times daily? This is an elderly dog. What could be possible problems? - George

It can be a very serious problem. I would take your dog to the vet ASAP. Excessive drinking is called polydipsia. There are many potentially serious conditions that PD can be an indicator of. Diabetes is a common one. If this is not treated soon, the dog will die. Kidney problems can also cause PD.

Another possible problem is Cushing's disease or hyperadrenalcorticism. Big word! What it basically means is the adrenal glands are malfunctioning and causing the kidneys to act up. It's like taking a steroid. You get excessive thirst. Cushings can be treated.

It could also be less serious ailments but it's better to be safe than sorry!
